About Polymet
Polymet is a world-class manufacturer of high performance wire for hardfacing, welding and thermal spraying. We produce high quality products used in the aerospace, automotive, cement, mining, lumber, nuclear, power generation and many other industries. Our wires are ideal for demanding applications such as metal to metal, metal to earth; high impact, high abrasion, corrosion and high temperature, or combinations of these wear factors.

Arc sprayed amorphous alloys have gained widespread use for wear resistance in a variety of applications.  An amorphous alloy has a “glasslike” structure, rather than crystalline.  They are very hard (50-70 HRC) and have an extremely low coefficient of friction.  As a result, they are very effective for sliding and abrasive wear.

Polymet manufactures a number of amorphous materials for our arc spray wire product line.  The wires are cored wires, often called flux cored wires.  They utilize a special powder formulation placed inside of a metal sheath.  These are generally FeCrBSi based alloys such as Vecalloy B, PMET 273, PMET 270 and 296.  They all offer excellent wear and corrosion resistance, when arc sprayed.

The most effective of these alloys has proven to be Vecalloy B.  It has a specially designed formula which includes niobium, resulting in superior wear resistance.  It also has close to double the bond strength of the other alloys, allowing thicker coatings when needed, without spalling or cracking.  The addition of nickel to the alloy gives it better corrosion resistance compared to other amorphous alloys.

Applications where amorphous alloys have proven effective include boiler tubes in coal fired boilers form power generation, dryer rolls in the pulp & paper industry, auger screws for grain and hydraulic shafts.

Polymet Corporation, a leading producer of hardfacing wire, welding wire and thermal spray wire, will be traveling to Japan and South Korea in early December 2011 in order to support its aerospace, lumber, valve and thermal spray wire business in these markets.  Working together with local distributors and representatives enable the company to expand its global reach and promote its product lines in Asia.

Danny Newman, hot extruded wire sales manager at Polymet who will be traveling to Japan and Korea will be working with companies on the cutting edge of laser welding technology as they use Polymet’s unique ability to produce ultra-fine (0.3mm) cobalt alloys to laser weld micro cracks in aerospace gas turbine engine components.  Polymet has supplied alloys like PMET 906, a Stellite 6 equivalent and PMET 994 (PWA 694) into the Japanese laser welding market to repair cracks and defects in components on a small precision scale as well as meet with other distributors and end users of Polymet’s wire.

“It’s always a pleasure to be in Japan and Korea.  Our distribution network brings years of experience and expertise in the hardfacing, welding and thermal spray markets.  We have seen good growth from this region in the aerospace, lumber and thermal spray markets over the past several years and we are looking forward to focusing on and expanding our industrial product line in the years to come ”, says Mr. Newman.

Our wires are ideal for demanding applications such as metal to metal, metal to earth; high impact, high abrasion, corrosion and high temperature, or combinations of these wear factors.

Polymet Corporation, a leading manufacturer of high performance wires for hardfacing, welding and thermal spraying located in Cincinnati, will exhibit at the FABTECH Show in Chicago, on November 14-17, 2011.

FABTECH is North America’s largest metal forming, fabricating and welding event showcasing new developments in materials and equipment.  Polymet will exhibit their thermal spray coating and hardfacing welding material solutions.  FABTECH’s scope alloys Polymet to showcase their entire product line at one venue.  Thermal spray wire, hardfacing wire and welding wire will all be on display for Polymet.  From cobalt based MIG and TIG wires to nickel based arc spray wires and tungsten carbide wires for wear resistant application, Polymet will bring their entire catalogue to display at this event.

Bob Unger, sales manager for Polymet states, “It’s always very exciting to be back at FABTECH.  We look forward to discussingPolymet’s latest solutions to the industries thermal spray and hardfacing alloy needs.  FABTECH gives us an opportunity to see many of our existing customers in one location as well as meet new prospects.  Particularly this year we look forward to showcasing our ever growing line of tungsten carbide and amorphous alloys to the industry.  We are sure as always that the event will be a great success.”

Are you planning on attending the FABTECH Show this year?  Stop by and see us at our booth!

Polymet Corporation continually strives to utilize it’s unique extrusion technology to introduce high quality cobalt based products to the market place for superior performance in harsh environments.  Over the past two years Polymet has worked to develop an equivalent to Stellite 6b bar to offer the industry.  We are now pleased to offer PMET 906B as a standard product.

PMET 906B is a cobalt based chromium, tungsten alloy suitable for extreme heat, wear and abrasion conditions.  PMET 906B is non-galling, has a low coefficient of friction, retains high hardness at high temperatures, recovers full hardness after 2000° F exposure and has excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, thermal shock and heat checking.  PMET 906B performs excellent in wear environments where seizing, galling, abrasion and corrosion are present either alone or in combination with each other, making  the alloy very versatile.  Unlike other cobalt based cast alloys, PMET 906B is hot forged resulting in a refined wrought grain structure that gives the alloy added strength and ductility, all while maintaining the wear and heat corrosion resistance inherent in cobalt based materials.
